Building a new website requires a smart approach to your budget. Especially when starting a business, fixed costs can quickly add up, while a live website with accompanying hosting and a domain name is not immediately necessary in the initial phase.

By starting with a local test environment on your own computer, you build the complete website without any interim costs. You use your PC as a secure workspace where you can add content, test themes, and perfect the layout in peace. Only when the website is fully ready for use do you purchase hosting and take the site online.

Why building on your own computer is so smart

Many beginners think that you need to purchase hosting and a domain name immediately to build a WordPress site. That is not the case. Your own PC or laptop is powerful enough to serve as a 'secret' test environment.

0.- Euro Startup Costs

You don't pay a single cent for monthly hosting, domain registrations, or SSL certificates as long as you are building.

100% Safe & Protected

No one can accidentally peek at a site that is not yet finished. No nosy competitors and no search engines indexing a half-empty page.

Try it out slowly

You can test endlessly, make mistakes, delete everything, and start over. You won't break anything on the real internet.

Install WordPress on your PC in 4 simple steps

To run WordPress on your own computer, you need a program that tricks your PC into acting like a tiny internet server. One of the simplest and most reliable tools for this is Local (formerly LocalWP). It is free and requires zero technical knowledge.

Step 1: Download the free software

Go to the official Local website (localwp.com) and click on the large free download button. Choose your operating system (Windows or Mac) and enter your details. Download the installation file and open it on your computer.

Step 2: Create a new site

Open the Local program. You will see a bright screen with a large button: "Create a new site" (or the '+' icon). Click on this. Enter the desired name for your project (for example, my-new-company) and click on "Continue".

Step 3: Choose the default settings

The program will now ask for the settings. Simply choose "Preferred" here. This ensures that the program automatically selects the most stable and latest settings that work perfectly with WordPress. You do not need to adjust anything yourself.

Step 4: Create your administrator account

Enter a username, a strong password, and your own email address. These are the login details you will use to log in to your own WordPress dashboard shortly. Click on "Add Site". After loading for a minute, your complete test environment is ready!

From now on, simply click on "Admin" in the Local program to log in to your own WordPress environment, or on "Open Site" to see what your website currently looks like to visitors.

What are we going to do in the next step?

You now have a fully functional, clean WordPress installation ready on your own PC. You can log in to the dashboard and start building.

In the next part, we will look at the foundation of your site: the design. We will discuss how to choose the right theme, how to prevent your site from becoming slow due to overly 'heavy' ready-made templates, and what a good, clean foundation must meet.
